Course Description: This class will address from a woman's perspective: basic sword and shield technique, power generation, physical and psychological issues and non-issues, armoring so that you may fight comfortably in your armor, and attitude on and off the field. If you do not yet have armor, you can still take the class, as there are plenty of techniques that can be practiced without armor. Also, there may be some loaner armor available. Tournament etiquette, head space and how to die well

The class covers three areas that are interrelated. The first being the nuts and bolts of what to do when you step onto the field, why we do it and how to do it well. How to fight a mutant lefty

Description: The great axe, no matter whats its nationality or style of construction has brought fear and hesitation to those who have fought against it since its inception. Its mass and cutting power are unsurpassed by any weapon save the halberd. The use of such a weapon takes skill and determination however, as well as a carefull thought and savage purpose. It is used for both offense and defense, and therefore must be used wisely.
In this class I will teach you basic and advanced ideas on defense with this great weapon, as well as several options of attack that cannot be found with weapons such as the sword or spear. These various modes of attack can be used effectively against any style of combat when applied properly.

This is the most important class, from the instructor's perspective, and is not necessarily for beginners. The instructor covers the body mechanics of the techniques, along with training and integration exercises. The instructor does a lot of hands-on, individual correction.

A Circle-Based System for Understanding Sword Blows

The class will teach a system of broadsword technique in which all sword blows are viewed as parts of circular motions. Beginning with the simplest fundamental techniques, this method will be extended to include even most advanced sword blows. This circle-based approach has several advantages. While remaining dynamic and versatile, it is easier on the joints of the practitioner. All sword blows developed this way exist in relation to every other blow in the system resulting in smooth transitions. Sufficient study of this method allows easy "on-the-fly" creation of combinations, integration of sword blocks with attacks, and quick understanding of new "trick shots". The class is suitable for both the novice and advanced fighter, though novices may find that their brains are "full" before the class is finished.

Applying Leather to Plastic Armour

Course description:I will discuss options for disguising plastic armour with an emphasis on how to sheath plastic armour pieces in light leather and how to decorate that leather skin. We will not construct armour in this class but students are welcome to bring in armour pieces to discuss a strategy to cover them. This technique uses contact cement and lacing to bond the leather to the plastic and give you an attractive, long-lasting finish to your budget armour. This technique can also be used to cover wooden or plastic shields.

Construction and Fitting of the C-Belt

Course description:Designed to settle the weight of leg armour onto the pelvic girdle rather than the lower back, a properly fitted C-belt can increase stamina by reducing the fatigue created by that nagging lower backache that sometimes shows up while in armour. The design works as well for men as for women, bearing in mind that women have a physiological advantage in weight distribution around the hips. This class will cover the creation of the C-belt pattern, fitting, and construction. Handouts will contain all information covered in the class.

Course description: How to make leather gauntlets. Instructor will demonstrate how to make one of two types of leather gauntlets, patterns will be supplied. Fighting Clothes for Norse Personas

Course description: This class will provide general information on making a gambeson and pants for heavy fighters with Norse personas. This class will also include an overview of Norse art, covering from approximately the late fifth to the end of the eleventh century, to facilitate ornamentation choices in accord with the fighters' personas. Course description: This will be a two part class, with two hours being taught on consecutive days. Part two will be an introductory class on basic heraldry, such as is taught at Ithra and the Kingdom Heraldic Symposium. Ordinaries, field divisions, types of charges, lines of division, etc. will be discussed and, time permitting, assistance will be offered to those wishing to design armory. In order for the students to gain the maximum benefit, both classes should be taken.

Banner Making - Design, Construction and Style

Course description: Class begins with a broad historical overview of the use of banners throughout history. It will then focus on SCA applications. Discussion of construction techniques for durability and display as well as a discussion of the basics of design and style to help balance designs on the banner. Some discussion on various types of poles and embellishments. Sewing level: Beginner to Intermediate.

Shields - Decorating the Fighting Shield

Course description: From start to finish! Creating a 'pattern' for your work of art. How to size and transfer your design, surface preparation, which paints work best on which surfaces, other types of decoration, and various aesthetic and constructive tips to help make your shield stand out on the field. Both Western European heraldic design and non-heraldic culture 'heraldry' design will be explored. You do not need to know how to draw to get something out of this class!

Heraldry for Non-Heraldic Cultures

Course description: What do you do if your persona is before the 12th century -- or in an area of the world that did not have heraldry in period (Russia, Asia, etc) -- but you still want to have heraldry registered in the College of Arms of the SCA? (Or, perhaps, you are a Sergeancy candidate, and your Baroness wants you to have heraldry registered in the College of Arms?)
This class gives approaches for designing heraldry and heraldic display which will reflect your culture and will still be "heraldic enough" to be registered in the College of Arms. Remember, the College of Arms requires that the items registered adhere to the SCA's interpretation of the basic principles of heraldry, and not all period art or design is part of heraldry. But, fortunately, much of heraldry is also part of period art and design! (And never forget, heraldry looks *spiff* both on the tournament field or beside it.)

"Now that I have a passed device, what do I do with it???? -- Heraldic display on and off the field"

Course description: The class shows various ways, from quick and dirty to time consuming and expensive that heraldry may be utilized on and off the field by fighters, inspirations, adults, children, pets, groups, etc. A handout on period size and shape of "things that go on pole type objects and flap in the wind" will be available. Discussion, show and tell, and questions are encouraged.

How to be a Herald without Hurting Yourself
Instructor: Ciaran Cluana Ferta
Duration: 2 hours
Class size: Min 2 Max 30
Course description: A lungs-on class to teach the student how to herald 5-6 rounds of a tournament without hurting themselves. In this class you will learn basic vocal projection technique, the Order of Precedence (who goes first?) and proper technique for working on the tourney field.
